Ghost Giant – A Ghostly and Captivating Adventure for PSVR

REVIEW – Zoink Games presents its new work developed exclusively for the PS4 star peripheral: PSVR. Ghost Giant is a very special and careful adventure that has been endowed with a lot of charm.

PSVR is in top form, or that’s the feeling it gives me. For a while now, there are several titles that I analyze every month for this peripheral (to which are added the rest that my colleagues comment), some of them even exclusively dedicated to the PlayStation virtual reality device. The last to appear in this great Zoink Games work that is called Ghost Giant, a pretty representative title because that is precisely the character we control.

From a subjective perspective (in which we only visualize the “arms” of the character) we must adopt the role of a gigantic ghost of bluish colour that, apparently, comes alive thanks to the “energy” that comes from the co-protagonist of this story: Louis. This small talkative cat (the tadpole speaks by the elbows) that, in addition, is the only being able to see us, is plunged into all sorts of problems … quite mundane, really. And as you have already imagined, our goal is to help you as much as possible throughout the game.

That is to say, that during the 12 short levels (or scenes) we must do all the possible one so that Louis leaves the state of sadness in which at the beginning of the adventure it is to reach the happiness. It may be a bit of a purpose (and, in fact, it certainly is), but fortunately, the story that tells us this work is interesting and is involving other characters of animal nature (bears, horses, etc.).

Ghost Giant, puzzles in static

The proposal on which the development of Ghost Giant is based is quite traditional. We are facing an adventure in which we must interact with different objects and, sometimes, characters (like Louis himself) to find the key to a good number of pretty simple puzzles. And while we do it, we are witnesses of the different vicissitudes that are playing the role of both the kitten and other types that appear in the different scenarios that host this production.

Vehicles, costumes, keys, different fruits and other objects must be handled by the giant in a correct way to solve the most varied situations that you can imagine, such as crossing a bridge blocked by rocks, painting posters, etc. As I said, the design of the vast majority of the puzzles is very simple, and you can tell it’s a title that has been created so that it can be enjoyed by any player, even the youngest ones. The result is an entertaining adventure while it lasts but that is very ephemeral (it can be overcome in about three hours ) and, also, presents a ridiculous level of difficulty: if you are looking for a challenge, look elsewhere because here you will not find it or by a long shot.

Here’s the game experience fixed

Following the game mechanics that this production proposes, each level or scene has a fixed approach. That is, we can not move at any time and it is only possible to contemplate the beautiful scenarios from two or three different perspectives. For this reason, the absence of movement (either free or by teleportation) gives the game experience a static and tremendously slow character that may not convince certain users. But, at the same time, precisely for that reason it is practically impossible to experience dizziness or other inconveniences linked to virtual reality that usually throws back another group of players, so one thing for another.

On the other hand, and as I have mentioned before, interaction with objects takes place only with the arms and hands of the ghost. To represent the movement of both extremities it is necessary to use two Move commands, one for each arm, responding in a very precise way to all our gestures, something fundamental in this class of titles.

Super visuals and sounds

In short and taking into account everything that I have explained so far, Ghost Giant is one of those proposals that are enjoyed a lot (as long as you like their approach) while they last and also has a superb audiovisual section. The way in which all scenarios have been recreated, in plan models but with a multitude of objects and mobile elements, is the most captivating that has been seen so far in PlayStation VR. And to this is added the recreation of both Louis and the other characters that are seen throughout the title, showing them all a caricaturesque aspect very successful as well as a formidable animation and expressiveness.

This outstanding graphics section is joined by a magnificent sound facet where the extraordinary dubbing in English of all the protagonists stands out and very appropriate effects and melodies to each situation.

GOOD

As brief as captivating. Both qualifiers are those that best describe this new work of Zoink Games that, within its style and taking into account its various flaws is one of those productions that are well worth enjoying by PSVR users. Ghost Giant is a very careful title in all its aspects, especially everything that has to do with its graphics and sound finish, being a highly recommended option for those who seek a leisurely, very relaxed gaming experience for all audiences.
