FromSoftware is already secretly hinting at its next major project (or one of its upcoming big titles…?) with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that came out recently, garnering a lot of praise and success.
A Song of Ice and Fire – this is the name of the series of books written by George R. R. Martin (who isn’t done with it yet), and A Game of Thrones, the HBO series that ended recently, was based on it, too. Previously, we wrote about how the writer has been consulting with a Japanese game studio, which is likely FromSoftware, as he discussed a lot with Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of the studio, about a project codenamed GR. (The game’s official name is not known yet. GR is short for Great Rune, but since it’s just a codename, we’ll have to wait until Bandai Namco reveals it at E3, maybe.)
This game secretly showed up in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice! GamesRadar reports that a modder called TKGP has found a reference to Great Rune in Sekiro’s files. One material configuration file references a folder named GR. However, Sekiro’s assets are stored in another one, NTC! It’s not a coincidence!
On Reddit, Kalash thinks Great Rune is thus in active development at the moment, and that it will not use Unreal Engine 4, but FromSoftware’s internally developed engine. It’s based on a reference to a map called m99, which is what FromSoftware is using as debug in its engine.
So it’s time for Bandai Namco, the publisher of Souls games on PC (except for Demon’s Souls, the PS3-exclusive title…) to confirm the GR codenamed project at E3. Let’s hope it will be just as high-quality as the other games from FromSoftware in the past decade!

Apparently there was a sneaky little reference to Great Rune sitting here in the Sekiro material configs all along. pic.twitter.com/H5uKZOUzZi
