Nintendo‘s quarterly financial report reveals just how well the Nintendo Switch is selling.
Let’s start with the total sales figure: 36.87 million. That is how many Nintendo Switch units have been sold between March 3, 2017, and June 30, 2019, which is already more than the lifetime sales of the Nintendo 64, but it’s still a long way behind the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, aka the SNES with its 49.1 million figure. In the first fiscal quarter of the year between April 1 and June 30, 2.13 million Switch units and 22.61 million games were sold (the lifetime Switch game sales are now at 210.13 million, meaning nearly six games were sold on average with one console). Unlike Sony, Nintendo has not modified its expectations between April 2019 and March 2020 – they still expect to see the Nintendo Switch sold 18 million units. The 2.13 million sales might sound weak, but remember that Super Mario Maker 2 came out too late to have a major impact on the hardware sales (and yet, in only three days, as the game came out on June 28, it sold 2.42 million copies – see what we mean?), and traditionally, it’s always the fourth quarter (the fiscal third, October-December) is where the sales see a significant boost.
Nintendo also updated its first-party Nintendo Switch-exclusive titles‘ sales. The top 10 follows:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 17.89 million
- Super Mario Odyssey – 14.94 million
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 14.73 million
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 13.61 million
- Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! – 10.98 million
- Splatoon 2 – 9.02 million
- Super Mario Party – 6.99 million
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 4.10 million (released January 10)
- 1-2 Switch – 3.01 million
- Mario Tennis Aces – 2.75 million
So in only three days, Super Mario Maker 2 almost made the top ten list, which is not bad from a level editor. The Nintendo Switch continues its superb performance, and for a good reason: even The Outer Worlds is going to get a Nintendo Switch version!
