We never expected such a The Witcher mod to come to fruition, but as always, creativity knows no boundaries.
On ModDB, we see a mod which is called The Witcher: Total War. It is a total conversion mod of Medieval II: Total War, which, according to its developers, „lets you play as your favourite factions from both the Witcher books, games and comics (and soon to be released Netflix series), taking heavy inspiration from all mediums, featuring very recognisable characters and settlements.”
According to a blog post, the team starts small by focusing on three playable factions, namely Redania, the Nilfgaardian Empire, and Novigrad, and they do so on a map that encompasses Velen and Novigrad. When the three factions are playable, the team is going to release a demo to give a teaser to the players on what they can expect and how The Witcher could work in an RTS format. After that, the devs have high hopes, as they want to expand the mod into further regions (such as the Northern Realms), as well as to have no less than 29 different factions. They also want to include the various Witcher schools – each would give unique skillets and abilities for the players.
CD Projekt RED‘s The Witcher-trilogy are action-RPGs based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books (they managed to strike a new deal with him, giving possibly more money for the writer), plus GWENT, the card game from The Witcher 3, turned into a standalone game, or Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales that started as a single-player campaign for GWENT before spinning off into a standalone title. Let’s also not forget about The Witcher Adventure Game, which turned the board game into a video game.
So even though there’s no official RTS adaptation of The Witcher, this mod looks promising. Who knows, maybe CD Projekt RED gets the wind of it, and it might even become an official project.
