Let’s raise our glass: CD Projekt RED‘s games and even Andrzej Sapkowski got popular thanks to The Witcher Netflix series.
Let’s start with the facts: compared to the 2015 Steam launch, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and even the Nintendo Switch, had more concurrent players (CCU for short) than when it launched nearly five years ago! Even Marcin Momot, the community manager of CD Projekt RED wrote about it, and 93835 concurrent players is an outstanding result (the previous record was 92 thousand).
The Game of the Year version of the game is a best-seller on both Steam and CD Projekt-owned GOG, thanks to the Netflix series which launched on December 20. It has an 8.7/10 IMDB score, and a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so the community loved the first eight episodes, although the critics didn’t. Still, Business Insider reports based on Parrot Analytics data that The Witcher was „the third most in-demand original streaming series in the US for the week of December 18 to December 24,” behind Stranger Things (also on Netflix) and The Mandalorian (on Disney+). No wonder there are rumours (https://wegotthiscovered.com/tv/netflix-reportedly-greenlit-season-3-witcher/) of a THIRD season at this point, even though the second season’s production won’t start until February (with the episodes planned to arrive in early 2021).
The first The Witcher game broke records (11182 CCU), and the second one also got fairly high (although Assassin of Kings’ 5865 peak isn’t the highest), but even the writer of the books, Andrzej Sapkowski can see success. On Amazon’s Author Rank chart, he is in the #1 spot, even beating out J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter books!
Watch out, at this rate Geralt could become the next Game of Thrones…
