Blizzard‘s remaster, Warcraft III: Reforged has more issues than enjoyable moments, and it’s not even meant to be a joke.
Warcraft III launched nearly two decades ago, and it was a pleasure in its time. Blizzard decided that after Starcraft’s remaster, they want to give a fresh coat of paint for the third Warcraft game with a modernised version. The players have ripped it apart: on Reddit, they have criticised Blizzard. The graphics look downgraded, assets are missing (or they are modified pictures, such as this example with a skull being changed in Reforged for no real reason), the animations are weak, the game is buggy, the performance is shoddy, the user interface is not redesigned – just a few of the several critiques aimed at Warcraft III: Reforged. On Metacritic, on a 1-10 scale, the game is currently on a 1.5 user average score by 1457 users. Meanwhile, it seems Blizzard is banning those from their forums that request a refund.
So yes, Warcraft III: Reforged is off to a bad start, but it gets worse. There’s a map editor that allows you to make mods (Defense of the Ancients, also known as DotA – does this ring a bell? the MOBA genre started here…), but the creative players are out of luck. „Custom Games are and shall remain the sole and exclusive property of Blizzard. Without limiting the foregoing, you hereby assign to Blizzard all of your rights, title, and interest in and to all Custom Games, including but not limited to any copyrights in the content of any Custom Games. […] To the extent you are prohibited from transferring or assigning your moral rights to Blizzard by applicable laws, to the utmost extent legally permitted, you waive any moral rights or similar rights you may have in all such Custom Games, without any remuneration,” Blizzard’s ToS says. In other words, if you make something successful, you’ll not see a penny out of it, as Blizzard will own all the copyrights.
That’s not all! You can’t see clans, ranked matchmaking, custom campaigns, and you can’t use the classic Warcraft III client anymore either! You have to use the Reforged client, which means you no longer have community functions available. Oh, and the cutscenes haven’t been remastered either: they are all in the original format.
And with these reasons, the title should make sense: if a new version of something is far behind the original, then there are problems, and Blizzard won’t get the fans to support them with such moves.
