Dan Houser is going to leave the Rockstar Games company that he co-founded shortly.
In a U.S. Securities Exchange Commission filing, Take-Two’s statement reads: „After an extended break beginning in the spring of 2019, Dan Houser, Vice President, Creative at Rockstar Games, will be leaving the company. Dan Houser’s last day will be March 11, 2020. We are extremely grateful for his contributions. Rockstar Games has built some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful game worlds, a global community of passionate fans and an incredibly talented team, which remains focused on current and future projects.”
Dan Houser was responsible for the creative aspects of the Grand Theft Auto Series, but he also acted as a manager, writer, and producer for Rockstar. He was a writer for Bully, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3, and he also was part of the writing team of Red Dead Redemption 2 (about which we wrote that they had a significant crunch to get the job done).
Him waiting until Spring 2019 means he oversaw the console release of Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as a few more patches. (And he likely had no involvement with the PC port.) Rockstar Games continues to update Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Online, which is why they work on no single-player DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto V.
Dan’s brother, Sam, will remain at the company, and his role will not change. However, Dan Houser’s leave means Grand Theft Auto VI might feel different than the previous games. (The game isn’t announced yet, but it has to be in development.) We don’t know why he is leaving the company, but recently, we wrote about how Rockstar might be under pressure from Take-Two to make more games, as the publisher prefers quantity over quality – Houser might have disapproved of this approach.
Take-Two will publish their fiscal report for the previous quarter on Thursday.
