Is The PlayStation 5 Waiting For Its Rival?

PlayStation 5Sony wants Microsoft to go first and reveal how much their next-gen console will cost.

Sony’s quarterly financial earnings report meant that the company’s representatives had to talk about the PlayStation 5. They had to explain how they will lift over the games division from the PlayStation 4 to the PS5, plus they had to clarify what factors into the pricing of the next-gen console; a few of which Sony can handle, and a few others they can’t. Let’s see what Hiroki Totoki, the chief financial officer of Sony, replied:

„First, we must control the labour cost, the personnel cost. We will control that. How much can we prepare initially, we will work on the production and the sales and we will have to prepare the right volume. What is not very clear or visible is – because we are competing in this space – it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point. Depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay. So it’s a question of balance,” he replied.

In short, it’s too early to talk about the pricing, as they want history to repeat itself: in 2013, Microsoft revealed the price of the Xbox One at E3. A day later, Sony’s conference had Andrew House, the then-president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, drop the bomb on Microsoft by slashing their price by a hundred dollars, as they did not force a PlayStation Camera on us.

„We’ve begun to share some of the incredible features you can expect from PlayStation 5, but we’re not quite ready to fully unveil the next generation of PlayStation. And some bad news: Sony Interactive Entertainment told Gamesindustry that they are closing down their Manchester studio as part of their „efforts to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness.” The studio, which was opened in 2015, was meant to work on PlayStation VR games, and an unannounced project is probably cancelled now.

The PlayStation 5 will launch this Holiday season (probably for either 400, 450, or 500 dollars/euros), and rumours say a new PlayStation VR will also hit the shelves simultaneously.
