Valve Index: Lack Of Stock Due To Coronavirus

Valve Index – Valve at least promised that before Half-Life: Alyx becomes available, their new virtual reality headset will be available once again.

We can safely call the Valve Index a premium category headset, and not just because it costs a thousand dollars – it didn’t scare the customers away when Half-Life: Alyx was announced in November: they bought it all (and with it, they will get the game, too), causing a lack of supply – you had to turn every rock on the planet to find an unsold Index…

History is repeating itself. Again. „With Half-Life: Alyx coming March 23rd, we are working hard to meet the demand for the Valve Index and want to reassure everyone that Index systems will be available for purchase before the game’s launch. However, the global Coronavirus health crisis has impacted our production schedules so we will have far fewer units for sale during the coming months compared to the volumes we originally planned. Our entire team is working hard right now to maximize availability,” Valve told UploadVR.

It’s an important thing for Valve, as this is possibly the only time for them to become a big player on the VR scene. Sure, you can play Half-Life: Alyx with other VR devices (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift (S), Oculus Quest + Oculus Touch controller + link cable to your PC, etc…), but only the Index will offer you finger tracking in the game. You can get notified if the Valve Index is back in stock if you visit this page.

And Valve is not alone with this lack of stock. Even Nintendo admitted that they are struggling with the supply of the Nintendo Switch, even with them moving over manufacturing to Vietnam, as some parts are still made in China. And the coronavirus worries made Sony stay away from both PAX East and GDC (and we discussed both subjects earlier this week).

Half-Life: Alyx launches on March 23.
