Sony might likely implement a wireless solution to charge its next-gen controller, which is called DualShock 5 by everyone, even though it’s not been confirmed yet.
So there’s this new patent by Sony that is about a wireless charging adapter. Although the documentation specifically mentions the DualShock 4, we can safely think forward in this case. This adapter could be connected to the back of our controller, similar to the DualShock 4’s back button attachment that we previously mentioned. The interesting thing here is that the charger would have buttons that you could program to use in games. In it, Sony has essentially described the DS4’s back button attachment, which should be available in stores now.
The patent was published on February 27, and it’s likely that Sony wanted to go this direction with the back button attachment already. Sure, the comfort might be questionable (because the controller will be heavier this way – and with the attachment for the DualShock 4, it was at least curved along with the controller), but if we can charge the controller by just putting it on our desk with the charging adapter under it, that would be good. Sony might have not decided about it yet, especially because the PlayStation 5’s pricing will be important against the competition, namely the Xbox Series X, and if they have to cut a few corners for competitive pricing, they might do so with this idea…
Still, if Sony does make the DualShock 5 wirelessly chargeable, it would be a comfy solution for us, plus it could also be a good marketing move for Sony unless Microsoft announces something similar. That could happen.
Both the PlayStation 5 and its DualShock 5 will debut this Holiday season – the pricing is unknown, but for the former, the Xbox Series X’ price will play a role.
