Xbox Series X – Via Dynamic Latency Input (DLI), the latency or lag could be as small as possible – why is it important to have the least amount of time be spent from pressing a button on the Xbox controller to the game doing the action via our input?
Larry Hyrb, or Major Nelson, has interviewed Jason Ronald, the partner director of program management at Team Xbox (and that is a mouthful of a position in the gaming industry). The title of the podcast sounds exciting: „What can you expect from the next generation of gaming?”
„One of our focus areas, gamers really demand a low latency experience and they want to have the most precise and responsive controls. So what we’ve really done is we’ve analyzed the end to end pipeline to really identify every area of the pipeline where we can reduce latency and Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) is a new technology we’ve introduced, which actually allows the game to get the most recent input from the player. That way you don’t miss your input even if your input happens between different frames. And when we talk about games running at 120 frames per second, that ultra-low latency is critical to have a really great gaming experience, so we knew we needed to improve everything from the controller to the console as well as the console to the TV with new features in HDMI 2.1 such as auto low latency mode (ALLM) or variable refresh rate (VRR). And it’s really about getting the player to have that great immersive experience at all times,” Ronald said.
We previously discussed what ALLM and VRR does, but in short, the former changes our display/TV to the smallest latency mode as possible, while the latter changes the refresh rate to fit the game’s frame rate (so if something runs at 90 frames per second, our display will switch to 90 Hz). And input lag is something that might be noticed the best in a platformer game. If you pushed a button to jump and it didn’t happen, it might have happened because of the input getting „lost” between the frames.
The Xbox Series X will launch this Holiday season, and it seems this console will focus on the best experience possible. Will there be DLI on PC, too?
