Larian kept its word – they held a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, where we learned more about the new Baldur’s Gate.

„We don’t want to spoil anything but we wouldn’t call it Baldur’s Gate III if there wouldn’t be a link. Let me just say that we touch upon the story of Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 in meaningful ways, there are returning characters and what happened in BG 1/2/[Throne of Bhaal] leads to what happens into Baldur’s Gate III. You won’t necessarily see that at the start of the adventure but you will quickly understand once you get further into the game,” Swen Vincke, the creative director, said. So there will be a link to BioWare’s games.

The previous two main Baldur’s Gate games were based on the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition. However, Baldur’s Gate III will be based on 5th Edition, which is a more accessible ruleset that has led to a huge boost in DnD’s popularity. All twelve classes from this rulebook will be in the game, but not in the Early Access version. They confirmed that only half of the classes (Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue, Warlock, and WizardÖ will be in the early access launch.

What about the long and short rests? They will be implemented, but modified to make sense in a video game: „To take a long rest, the whole party needs to go to the camp and spend the night there. This will restore and reset any features normally tied to a long rest in 5e and also give the party a moment to reflect on recent events,” lead systems designer Nick Pechenin said. Meanwhile, the short rests will happen each time if we want to take a break between combat encounters.

What about the reactions? They will be implemented, but not immediately in early access: „While it’s not going to be in [early access] immediately, the features and mechanics that allow a character to perform an action as a reaction will trigger automatically. The players will be able to control which reactions they want to enable in anticipation of enemy actions. E.g. a wizard would disable their Attack of Opportunity but enable their Shield spell, which will be cast automatically whenever the wizard is targeted by an attack or Magic Missile spell,” Vincke said.

Baldur’s Gate III will launch shortly in Steam Early Access. There will also be a Google Stadia version.
