The Coronavirus Effect on the Gaming Industry Isn’t Really Negative

The COVID-19 is spreading throughout the world, and the analysts think that the coronavirus effect on the gaming industry might be positive.

Multiple analysts told WCCFTech that the sky is blue: as people try to lock themselves away from others to slow down the pandemic, they turned to other types of entertainment, such as gaming: Steam and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive keep breaking records, and the Internet is now used heavily, as many people play Call of Duty: Warzone (30+ million players) or Fortnite.

„Digital Entertainment, and in particular gaming, has become one of the safer bets since the Coronavirus broke out. Admittedly, stocks in this sector have plummeted like the rest of the global stock market but not in the same degree. According to us, this is a healthy sign in an overall unhealthy market,” wrote Swedish securities company, Redeye. It makes sense: a film can take your attention for about two hours, while a good game can be way more than that in total if it’s a good, enjoyable title.

„Gaming sessions are well-positioned to become socializing destinations for a part of the population. Not all digital socializing takes place on social media, and games have an opportunity to pick more of this up,” Karol Severin, a lead analyst at MiDiA Research, added.

The analysts think that despite the situation, more people will turn to games, increasing the player count. The industry believes that some of these newcomers will be return customers, to which we say wishful thinking – thinking too positively about this situation could end with a face flat fall.

So if we see positive numbers by the big publishers and console manufacturers in late April when they release their fiscal report, and we’re still alive by that point, this is why that will happen.
