PlayStation 5: RDNA 3 Features Included?

Aside from the already known and confirmed RDNA 2, the PlayStation 5 (or at least its GPU) might feature newer functions as well such as PlayStation 5 RDNA 3 functions.

Tidux, an industry insider, wrote the following on Twitter: „[The] PlayStation 5 supports all RDNA 2 features including VRS. But it doesn’t end there, it will support features that are exclusive to the platform and some RDNA 3.” Keep in mind that both Sony and Microsoft utilise AMD CPU-s and GPU-s for their respective next-gen consoles.

RDNA is Radeon DNA for short. This term covers an AMD GPU microarchitecture and instruction set. As the next-gen consoles all build on AMD technology, both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X (and the unconfirmed Xbox Series S?) will feature RDNA 2 technology. One of the biggest features of RDNA 2 is VRS or Variable Rate Shading for short. It increases the rendering performance and variety by varying the shading rate for different regions of the frame.

For example, if you play a racing game on 4K resolution, some parts of the frame, such as the trackside objects that could be also hidden behind motion blur, could be rendered at a lower shading level, which would free up GPU power for other things. All this would improve the PlayStation 5’s alleged efficiency features, and the AI, the rendering, or the texture loading speed could all see improvements if the PlayStation 5 RDNA 3 news are true.

However, RDNA 3 is nowhere near to launch on PC yet, so we don’t know what it could bring us, but we should expect increased speed and performance. If the rumour is true, then Sony should talk about it shortly (as Microsoft will also go a step further in May with the Xbox Series X), probably when they reveal the PlayStation 5 design to us.
