Star Wars: Battlefront III Might Not Happen Once Again?

History might repeat itself once again – as with Half-Life, Team Fortress, or Left 4 Dead, Star Wars: Battlefront might also never receive its third instalment: Star Wars: Battlefront III.

Twelve years ago, Free Radical Design’s Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was „99% complete,” but that game got cancelled. Now, Bespin Bulletin, a site that talks about Star Wars leaks, said the following: „Right now there are no plans for a Battlefront III. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but here we are. Enjoy The Battle of Scarif update, share some kind messages to the team at DICE who worked ever so hard on Battlefront II, and maybe the force be with you.” DICE has already confirmed that they are working on a next-gen Battlefield game (Battlefield 6?) with a late 2021 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (as well as PC, as the Origins/Steam platform duo, is not ignored).

Meanwhile, Star Wars: Battlefront II got its last update (and DICE didn’t keep its word, as the players never got playable female heroes, such as Ahsoka, but seeing how this game flopped in late 2017 with the loot boxes, just around the same time as Need For Speed: Payback has done the same thing, we’re not surprised), so the live service system flopped. The same goes for Battlefield V, as it also hit its last update – these mean that DICE should have at least some capacity to work fully on „Battlefield 6” and still have some manpower to work on Star Wars: Battlefront III’s concept.

However, Bespin Bulletin also says that Electronic Arts still wants to use the Star Wars IP – two games are in development. One is Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 (makes sense: a single-player title with no DLC and live service non-sense that sold well…), and the other one is EA Motive’s Star Wars: Project Maverick. The former would come in 2021, and the latter would follow a year later. Both are potentially next-gen titles.

None of this is official, though, but since the EA-Lucasfilms (Disney…) deal ends in 2023, these two games would be the two final moves by EA with the license. (Unless the deal gets extended – then Star Wars: Battlefront III could come in 2024.)
