The Government of Spain bets on the video game industry with the largest economic investment in history

This measure has been approved by the Council of Ministers and aims to support culture during the crisis.

The economic crisis resulting from the current confinement situation is part of the ravages of the coronavirus. The passage of COVID-19 and the declaration of the State of Alarm has led to serious economic consequences that harm most of the work sectors. Among them, we cannot forget the technology industry and the national development of video games.

To support both industries, the Government of Spain has announced a plan of measures with aid of more than 70 million euros to alleviate this economic crisis (to date, they have never invested more out of 5). This is announced by the Business Insider media, echoing the statements of the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, and the Minister of Culture, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes. “It is a sector of increasing quantitative and qualitative importance in our country,” they declared.

Of this amount, 20 million euros will go to “promoting youth employment in the Spanish digital industry”. This includes some of the studios that have released important titles such as Devolver Digital with GRIS, Digital Sun with Moonlighter or Tekila Works with RiME. Through Red.es, investments will be made to improve face-to-face and mixed modalities through various activities and co-financing from the European Social Fund.

The remaining 50 million euros will be used as follows: 15 million will go to improve the digital technology offer, and 35 to the development of artificial intelligence and other enabling technologies. “The sector is one of the key industries in the economic and social reconstruction plan in response to the COVID-19 crisis,” Garzón told Business Insider, “for its innovative and creative nature, for the intensive use of new technologies and the promotion of employment, and its contribution to new models of sustainable consumption and prevention of behaviours of intensive use in groups of risk, especially minors. ”

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
