Bloober Team (who are also developing a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X version for Observer…) believes that The Medium wouldn’t have reached its full potential on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
During Inside Xbox, many games were announced, or some already known titles got an Xbox Series X version (but since then, a few games, like Scarlet Nexus or Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, also added a PlayStation 5 version, plus the former title added a PlayStation 4/Xbox One/PC version as well). There were two exceptions. One of them was the H. R. Giger-inspired Scorn (which was planned just for PC, but now got an Xbox Series X version announced), and the other one was Bloober’s The Medium – neither said a single word about a current-gen version!
„The idea was like in 2012, I think, the first iteration of it. Of course, the game changed and our approach changed, but only next-gen can handle our vision. So yeah, we’ve been waiting for this. I can’t tell you right now about our most important feature, because we will have to save it for later. But the gameplay mechanic built around those two worlds couldn’t be fully realized on current-gen hardware. This is something that I think will distinguish The Medium from any other game. It’s also even patented. So yeah, the game simply cannot work the same way on current-gen platforms. And that’s why we are developing the game for Xbox Series X, plus PC,” Wojciech Piejko, the lead game designer, told GameSpot.
He also praised the Xbox Series X: „For the immersion that is crucial in our games, it was the best feature and it was delivered by Microsoft. And of course, the raw horsepower is great. So we are now able to deliver our vision of The Medium for the first time just how we imagined it,” he added.
The psychological horror game will have music by Bloober’s Arkadiusz Reikowski and Silent Hill’s Akira Yamaoka. The game will launch this Holiday season on Xbox Series X and PC.
