The Japanese company seems to want to gain a lot of cash with fewer releases. Can Capcom pull it off…?
Capcom‘s fiscal earnings report of the previous fiscal year can be read here, and in it, they also mentioned their plans for the current fiscal year that started on April 1 and will end with the last day of March in 2021. In this period, they want to reach 28 million game unit sales, which is significantly higher than in the previous three years. They want to do so with continued sales of the back catalogue, and 13 new SKUs.
Resident Evil 3 Remake (and its Resident Evil Resistance) took three away out of the thirteen (as it launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC). Ten remains. Rumours say that Resident Evil 8 will arrive in early 2021 as a cross-gen title, meaning it might take five SKUs (PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC), and five would remain. We have no clue what Capcom could be planning. A new Dead Rising? (As Dead Rising 3 was an Xbox One launch title, they might have the next instalment do the same for the Xbox Series X…) A new fighting game? They want to gain big with not a lot of games. Thus, it’s suspected that Resident Evil 8 will be in their launch slate for the current fiscal year. Capcom might announce this game shortly.
Speaking of Resident Evil, according to the earnings report, 98 million units were sold of this franchise’s titles. In three months, this figure grew by 3 million. Resident Evil 2 Remake is at 6.5 million sales in Capcom’s IP. Monster Hunter is at 44 million total sales, and Monster Hunter: World‘s Iceborne expansion alone sold five million units. This IP got mainstream with Monster Hunter: World. Here are the respective cumulative sales for other Capcom IPs: Street Fighter (44 million), Mega Man (36 million), Devil May Cry (22 million), Dead Rising (13 million).
Capcom wants to get a ton of sales, but they might fall on their faces if they go too bold.
