Xbox Series X: Price Comes First At Launch

Microsoft won’t initially focus on sales. (Perhaps because the company can get away with it: they get a ton of cash via the Windows OS…)

The BBC asked Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, about what he thinks if people can allow themselves a new console, especially in the middle of a possible financial recession (and maybe even a second wave of the coronavirus). „We want to make sure we’re providing the right value to customers. Price is going to be important, but our strategy is centred around the player, not the device. If this is not the year when a family wants to decide to buy a new Xbox, that’s okay. Our strategy does not revolve around how many Xboxes I sell this year,” Spencer replied.

He also mentioned that Microsoft wants to make Xbox an affordable platform: „We are a leisure activity. We’re not a requirement. We’re not food. We’re not shelter. So we want to be tuned in to that as we launch. How can we make it as affordable as possible? How can we give buyers a choice? We’ve got an Xbox All Access subscription programme that allows people to buy their next console by paying a monthly charge. […] And through technologies like smart delivery, you can buy your games and know that when you buy the next console, your games will move with you, to allow consumers to make the choice that’s right for them,” he added. We can tell you how they have buyers choice: the Xbox Series S (codenamed Lockhart), which isn’t announced yet. It’s the weaker model of the console.

The Xbox Series X (and maybe the Xbox Series S) will launch this Holiday season. Despite rumours, Microsoft reassured us that their event will be held in July and not August.
