Brett Schnepf named the controller for the first console The Duke – One of the visionaries of the Xbox Classic has taken his own life.
Seamus Blackley, responsible for the original idea for the first Xbox and one of its architects, announced a couple of days ago the death of Brett Schnepf, who was part of the team of creators of the brand and baptized the first Xbox controller with ’The Duke’ name, in honor of his son, Duke Schnepf, who now organizes a campaign donation for the burial and cremation of Schnepf.
“Being part of several amazing teams like the original Xbox launch, Flight Simulator, Sidewinder and many others, was his legacy. He took with him all the pride that he and his friends had for being part of such a historic moment,” Duke explained. “However, the thing he was most proud of was being able to name the controller in my honor, his first-born, referring to the Duke controller. When you mentioned Xbox, he always came up with the Duke controller. Microsoft gave him the confidence to settle down and start a family. Microsoft was irreplaceable in Brett’s life and made him the man he was.”
“Brett was in the hardware group (mice and keys) when we came to ruin his group and his whole world with the console thing. His easy smile, charm and tenacity were instrumental. He was also terrified that this project would ruin his career. “Blackley explained on his Twitter account.
Brett Schnepf took his own life on August 12, and his son has raised nearly $ 21,000 for his cremation and other related expenses, as well as for his youngest son Jack’s college fund. “The last words he left to Jack and me were to take care of each other and not follow in his footsteps. He honestly had a phenomenal life and would be very lucky to be half the man he was,” explained Duke Schnepf.
The first Xbox is now part of console history, made by creative artists and visionaries like Brett Schnepf. Rest in peace.
