“It’s going to play like a Prince of Persia,” says the lead designer of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum from Daedalic Entertainment.
Daedalic Entertainment has released a teaser trailer for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum:
Taking advantage of the video, the studio has published new information about the game. As its title suggests, the charismatic Gollum will be the protagonist of an adventure in which stealth and a narrative focused on decision making will prevail. All this, of course, under a setting typical of one of the most beloved fantasy sagas in the world.
Gollum will have no weapons, so he will have to use his cunning to overcome enemies.
Martin Wilkes, the lead designer at Daedalic, has stated that the game “mixes stealth with vertical climbing parkour.” At the same time, the creative has compared it to Prince of Persia: “It is not a fighting game, but Gollum will be able to eliminate enemies stealthily, although it will not be easy and will have risks. We want players to weigh these encounters; Gollum’s strengths focus on his cunning and not on combat.“
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be a different game than what we are used to in titles based on the saga in which action tends to prevail. Gollum will not use weapons, although he can throw objects at enemies, and take advantage of “the abilities of special allies”, which Wilkes says are characters that will be familiar to us and who will play small roles in the story, although in some cases very important.
The personalities of Gollum and Smeagol will mark the decision making of the adventure.
As they have already shown in adventure games like Goodbye Deponia, the narrative is important for the studio, and that is where the decision-making comes into play. Players will have to choose between the answers provided by Gollum’s personality, as well as Smeagol’s. The path we follow based on the answers can influence animations, landscapes and some dialogues.
The new video game, based on the works of JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, will arrive in 2021 for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC.
