The PlayStation shut down Japanese production of the PS Vita in 2019 after 7 years, but that didn’t mean the end of the handheld…
Vita means ‘life’, and although PlayStation Vita reached the end of its period a few years ago, being discontinued in the West in early 2018, the second-hand console market has revitalized this handheld console, at least in the Japanese territory. According to Famitsu data, compiled by Siliconera, the PlayStation handheld console remains Japan’s best-selling second-hand console via eBay.
The number one sales in the trade, in a period that spans from April to June this year, the first quarter of the Japanese fiscal year. With its departure from western markets, PS Vita extended its production in Japan for another year, ending its adventures in 2019. And, in the absence of first-hand stock, buying and selling have become the only way to go with this console that offered such good ideas, although it did not receive all the support it could deserve.
This is one of the main reasons why the PS Vita sells so well in the second-hand market, although eBay Japan points out a very curious detail. Getting this console in the West can be very expensive. In contrast, the PS Vita is for just 8,000 yen in their country, about $ 75, so they point out that many of the buyers are users from America who seek to import the console at a lower price to play their games or to speculate with reselling.
The curious thing of all is that the next best-selling second-hand console in Japan has been the PSP, Sony’s previous portable, while the Nintendo 64 appears in fifth place. Certainly, PS Vita did not enjoy the success in the West that it did in Japan, and it is seen that it maintains a good pull within this market, although PlayStation has already made it clear that handheld consoles are a business in which they no longer have a hand.
