When we are joking that something is capable of running on something basic like a toaster, it might no longer be a joke at this rate – id Software‘s eternal classic title got a port to a pregnancy test machine.
We already mentioned in September how Foone Turing, a hardware engineer and software programmer – who we call insane but in a positive manner – started to think whether it can run DOOM or not. Back then, the experiment wasn’t progressing that much yet, but a few months later, we can now say that id Software’s first-person shooter now runs on a pregnancy test.
The device is not meant to be used for such purposes. The resolution is much smaller than the huge CRT monitors we used even in the middle of the 1990s. The graphics are also similar to what a few potatoes could provide, but that’s not the point. No matter how DOOM looks like on this device, it’s all about how we can tear down the technical limitations around us in such a way that allows us to preserve self-expression and keep the creativity. If it happens, then our talent will be felt through our creation, and the result which was created with limitations always feels better than something we have done without any boundaries around us.
You can support Foone Turing’s work on Patreon or Ko-fi, and Archive.org‘s website, you can find all the videos that were recorded while testing the pregnancy test device to see how Doomguy (sorry, we still keep getting it wrong… Doom Guy!) pistols his enemies on the machine that has a monochrome display and a 128×32 resolution (which is even lower than 320×240 that was essentially a norm in 1993!). You have to see it to believe it.
From this step, we’re not far before we see a toilet running a game. Or a washing machine.

I tried zooming in and turning up the in-game gamma a bit, so you can see what’s going on slightly better.
