Kanye West’s Story With Nintendo

Reggie Fils-Aime, the former president of Nintendo of America (his seat is now taken by someone with a fitting name: Doug Bowser) revealed that the rapper contacted the big N to work together on something!

Nintendo Everything reported about the newest Talking Games With Reggie And Harold podcast, in which we hear Reggie, as well as Harold Goldberg, a games journalist. In it, one of the former iconic members of the big N (another one would be Satoru Iwata, the former president of Nintendo, who sadly passed away in 2015!) revealed a seemingly unbelievable story.

Kanye West came to the Nintendo booth at E3 (presumably in 2016), where he spent some time talking with Shigeru Miyamoto (an important developer behind the success of the company), and he requested to meet with Reggie (everyone calls Fils-Aime by his nickname). It happened, but the rapper was joined by his wife, Kim Kardashian.

Let’s quote Reggie: „Part of it was talking about what he was up to, he was experimenting with a piece of video game content; he wanted reactions to it. He comes out and says, ‘I want to work with Nintendo.’ We had so many different projects at Nintendo going on, the possibility of doing something with Kanye just wasn’t there, and so I had to find a way to politely decline this opportunity to work with him. I told him, ‘Kanye, you don’t want to work with us because we’re tough, we’re hard. All we do is push for the very best content. We would not be the type of partner you would want to work with.’ And he looks at me and says, ‘Reggie, you’re exactly the type of partner I want because of that reason!’ It’s like, ‘Oh my gosh.’”

West wasn’t on the wrong path, though: nowadays, Sony is working together with another rapper, Travis Scott, regarding the PlayStation 5, but we don’t know further details about what the rapper had on his mind back then.

Talking Games With Reggie and Harold is a series of seven „fundraising podcasts” for the non-profit organization New York Videogame Critics Circle. Reggie is on the board of directors for the organization, and Harold is its president. The NYVCC is currently „raising funds to bring games and games writing courses to high school students in homeless shelters in New York City.”
