IO Interactive‘s upcoming game will be playable in virtual reality as well, but only one version will make it possible.
The Danish team (who will self-publish the final episode of the Hitman reboot trilogy – as their CEO has recently said, the first one flopped due to its episodic format under Square Enix, which is why the sequel was properly released under Warner) provided a new Hitman III video. The last time we saw the game in action, it was for the first mission, set in Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Now, we can see the game in virtual reality with a first-person perspective.
The problem is that Hitman III’s VR is exclusive to the PlayStation VR. That requires a PlayStation 4, but thankfully, the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition also supports the game via backwards compatibility. However, the PlayStation Camera designed for the PlayStation 4 needs an adapter you can order from Sony to connect your PlayStation VR to your PlayStation 5.
The lucky thing here is that IO Interactive knows how the situation is somewhat awkward. This is why you will get a free digital PlayStation 4 copy of Hitman III for each purchase of the PlayStation 5 version (regardless if you acquired it in retail or via the PlayStation Store). Only the PS4 version supports the PlayStation VR, meaning you are out of luck on the next-gen version, as Sony is likely preparing a new virtual reality headset (because it’s unlikely that they will keep the ageing original model on market for long…), they won’t reveal it any time soon. It’s a bit of compromise.
Hitman III will launch on January 20 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC (as an Epic Games Store-exclusive), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch will also receive it but as a cloud version.
