We have already expected it to happen via several sources (such as patents, hardware plans, or even Sony‘s comments), but now we can officially say that Sony is now working on the new generation of the PlayStation VR.
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) senior vice president of platform planning and management Hideaki Nishino confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post that the PlayStation VR 2 (we have no better idea to name the new headset for now…) is under construction.„Today, I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with more dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity. Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset,” Nishino wrote.
Currently, the PlayStation 5 allows us to use the old PlayStation VR, which has been left behind technologically since by the PC competition, such as the Valve Index. You need an adapter to use the PlayStation Camera from the PlayStation 4 generation to use the PSVR on the PlayStation 5. That isn’t the best solution, is it?
The new PlayStation VR promises to enhance „everything from resolution and field of view, to tracking and input,” and if that doesn’t sound good, Sony added that the PlayStation VR 2 can be connected to the PlayStation 5 with a single cord! It simplifies setup, improves the ease-of-use, and it also enables a „high-fidelity visual experience,” according to Sony. The new controller for the headset (new PlayStation Move?) will implement some of the features the DualSense has, plus it will have „great ergonomics.”
SIE confirmed that the new PlayStation VR is not going to launch in 2021. So we should expect the new virtual reality headset to be available from 2022.
