This is such a subject that virtually nobody even thought of making it possible. And yet, here we are: you can play the 2020 consoles on Nintendo’s popular handheld that even surpassed Sony’s PlayStation Portable back in the day.
However, for this, you will need a device that was only released in Japan in 2004 (and not many units were manufactured). This TV tuner, which also works with the Game Boy Advance SP, was officially licensed by Nintendo, and it allowed the customers to receive terrestrial television with the help of the antenna (and it could probably be a useful way to spend time during long commutes).
The tuner itself has an interesting design. At first, you’d think you’d need 2×2 AA batteries to make it work, but at the bottom of each battery compartment, you can remove another lid to install two more batteries (what kind of design is this…?). That is not enough, however. You will also need an HDMI2AV converter to downsample the resolution of the image coming from the 2020 consoles. Thus, you can hook your new consoles, and get the signal to the tuner with the AV cable to your Nintendo DS, which shows the signal at 4:33 in the video below. (And no, only the top screen works. Don’t expect it to work on both displays, that’d require some black magic!)
So don’t expect 4K resolution or HDR on the Nintendo DS’ display, as that wasn’t meant to be used for such things. So get a magnifying glass or some good eyes to see everything on the screen. And yes, only the Xbox Series X was tested, but we’re sure the PlayStation 5 can also be hooked up the same way.
But what next… playing PlayStation 5 games on a microwave?
