Sony Wants To Break Its Annual Console Sales Record With the PlayStation 5

However, it’s not planned for the current fiscal year that started on April 1 (due to the shortages), but after that, the goal is to break the record.

In short, Sony wants to outright break its record set in 1998, when the PlayStation pulled 22.6 million units sold. In the next fiscal year (which will start on April Fools’ Day in 2022), the „blue team” would like to get more sales for the PlayStation 5 in a year!

Kenichi Yoshida, the CEO of Sony, was the one to state this in a general shareholders’ meeting on June 22. However, before him, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, has reportedly revealed this target before in May, during the investor relations day. (During the presentation held that day, Sony mistakenly used a fan-made God of War Ragnarok logo…)

However, if the PlayStation 5 does end up selling that amount (which is plausible due to the seemingly never-ending growth of the gaming industry…), then the PlayStation 2’s record (22.6 million units) would also be beaten, not to mention the PlayStation 4 (20 million) and the PlayStation 3 (14.4 million). The goal is admittedly ambitious, and the global supply chain will provide challenges in reaching the target. Jiji, a Japanese news agency, reports that Sony might be still taking advantage by staying home though born from the pandemic.

Yoshida added that Sony is aiming to ramp up the production of the PlayStation 5 in the next fiscal year, which could be using a semi-customized 6nm AMD CPU instead of a 5nm one used currently. There is a global semiconductor shortage at the moment. Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s chief financial officer, added that even with more production, the supply would still not catch up to the demand.

At least they are on the right path with the PlayStation Direct method, set to debut in Western Europe this year. It would cut the scalpers out, and if they can limit the number of consoles ordered per household to one or two (for a sibling, for instance), it would be beneficial for everyone.
