Sony Isn’t Bothered By The Slowing Pace Of The PlayStation Plus Growth

The company says there is nothing to worry about the recent drop in PlayStation Plus subscribers.

In the first fiscal quarter (April-June), Sony revealed promising results, driven by its PlayStation business. Still, despite a 9.3% increase in income from network services (PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are a few of them), there was a significant decline in the subscriptions to PlayStation Plus.

“Of course, 104 million is not a substantial number, but are we looking at it as a declining trend? We don’t think so. We are trying to analyze different elements, but there are no conspicuous trends that we can capture. Maybe this month or next month, we will have to continue to watch and do an analysis.

Last year, the stay-at-home demand was so significant in hindsight, so compared to that period as a trend, of course [it’s declined]. [But] compared to fiscal 2019, there is an increase. So, we will monitor the situation carefully, and we will deepen the engagement and enhance the platform, therefore during the coming fiscal year, we will take actions to support this business,” Hiroki Totoki. Sony’s chief financial officer said during a webcast, VGC reported.

So, they plan to enhance the platform, and it’s about time to do so. Currently, PlayStation Plus subscribers receive just two PlayStation 4 games, with one PlayStation 5 title (which itself tends to be a new port of a previously released game). In the past, we had PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita games added to the subscribers’ game library… which shows that there is indeed a long way to improve.

As we reported the other day, currently, there are 46.3 million PlayStation Plus subscribers. While it is an increase from last year, the growth is indeed not that significant.
