American McGee threw the “locking up” method into the recycle bin: he published the Alice: Asylum game’s concept script outlines, hoping that he could turn it into a video game.
Let’s admit it: American McGee’s two Alice games became cult classics, although his Bad Day L.A. game was a bit… different. However, he seems to suffer from Valve-itis: similar to Gabe Newell; he cannot seem to get the third game on board, just like Team Fortress, Half-Life, or Portal are stuck without having a main, third instalment.
Alice has been in Wonderland twice, and both were decent action-platformers. However, the creator wants to make a new game. He wrote the script, pitch, concept, whatever you want to call it… and then promptly shared it with the world. You can read his work on Alice: Asylum over on American McGee’s Patreon ().
“The narrative contained within is still very much a Work In Progress. The polishing phase for those things will come next as part of the Crowd Design process, and keep in mind that this content is not an exhaustive collection of everything we imagine will be in the game – but the minimum amount required to convey the main story,” McGee wrote. Indeed: he will modify the game’s concept with the help of his supporters! And keeping ideas in his head makes sense: otherwise, there would be no need to make a game.
American McGee has been working on the script and concept since 2017, always being clear that he has no hand in the future of the series, as Electronic Arts own the Alice IP. The first game, American McGee’s Alice, was released in 2000, followed by Alice: Madness Returns in 2011. It’s been a long minute since the second game, huh?
If Electronic Arts wants to play its cards right, they should sell the I.P. to Embracer Group, given how fast they have been acquiring studios left and right in the previous years. Under the Swedes, American McGee would get his game started in no time…
