MOVIE NEWS – Although Tom Cruise himself did not attend this year’s CinemaCon, one of America’s biggest film events, he still caused a sensation when the first 13 minutes of Top Gun: Maverick were screened.

The production opens with Cruise’s character, Maverick, and his superior, the Admiral (Ed Harris), in conflict. The military command wants to disband an elite flying unit called Top Gun, and Maverick decides to fly at Mach 10 (Mach is the speed of sound, 1225 km/hour) out of defiance. Maverick takes off and the furious admiral and his team watch from the control room. The plane reaches Mach 10, and even exceeds it, but the engine catches fire from the unusually high load, and the fighter-bomber appears about to explode. In the next scene, however, Maverick walks unharmed into a restaurant. He asks: where am I? On Earth, replies a little boy at the counter.

The new Top Gun film is the result of a long labour. Tom Cruise was reluctant to return as Maverick until a script worthy of the 1986 classic was written. It looks like it was finally done.
