PlatinumGames doesn’t rule out Bayonetta’s new story heading elsewhere than Nintendo’s platform(s).
Let’s not forget that the first Bayonetta was indeed a multiplatform title. Still, SEGA funded the development, so it made sense to release it on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, followed by a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC port. Then, Bayonetta 2 was funded by Nintendo, which led to the first game getting a Wii U and a Switch version. The third game (announced nearly four years ago) got a proper reveal last week, and it’s also in the big N’s hands: Nintendo decides about everything, including when to showcase the witch called Cereza.
Hideki Kamiya, the creator of Bayonetta, noticed people demanding Bayonetta 3 on other platforms than the Switch. He wrote the following on Twitter as a response: “Just like with Bayonetta 2, we’re developing Bayonetta 3 with funding from Nintendo. We are “development only”, and all publishing decisions are with Nintendo. So feel free to send your requests to ‘release the game on other consoles’ to Nintendo. If Nintendo asks us to port the game to [the] PlayStation 5 and provides funding, we might do that.
The chance of Bayonetta 2 and 3 being ported to PlayStation 5 and Xbox [Series] isn’t zero… Nintendo has to decide. By that same logic, games like Mario and Zelda could show up can play on PlayStation 5 etc., is not zero. So good luck sending passionate pleas to Nintendo and trying to get that to happen. If I were you, I’d buy a Switch,” Kamiya wrote. In other words, he would do it if he had everything provided to do so.
However, Mario and Zelda are Nintendo IPs. Those will likely never be outside the big N’s ecosystem, unlike The Wonderful 101 Remastered, which (despite Nintendo funding) got ported to other platforms, as its IP is not entirely in Nintendo’s hands. Bayonetta 3, on the other hand, is expected to launch on the Nintendo Switch in 2022.
