Over the weekend, we reported that Marvel’s Avengers had failed to deliver on its promise at E3 2019, but also in one of the last blog posts before its release last August. There would be only cosmetic microtransactions. However, now some directly affect gameplay in Marvel’s Avengers that shows how the live service model isn’t that successful. It led to critical voices (rightfully, might we add…), as this scenario was never supposed to happen.
However, judging from the action-reaction thought process, they have themselves (or perhaps the overly money-hungry Square Enix, who are spending money elsewhere for no reason…?) to thank for the situation.
The game’s failure (because it underperformed in sales) may be what Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are trying to overcome. Still, Marvel’s Avengers is not that different from Anthem, which has also failed (at Electronic Arts, not Square Enix). No official reaction has come yet from either the developer or the publisher (the latter prefers to pay Denuvo’s DRM license fee for games where it no longer makes sense; for instance, there’s a game that is scandalously bad and will never be updated, and yet, it still has it).
However, Crystal Dynamics provided a statement on Reddit: “We appreciate the Marvel’s Avengers community and want to foster an open and healthy dialogue with you (for both criticism and praise). However, harassment is not tolerated. Decisions at the studio are not made by one person; they’re made by a group of studio leaders. We welcome feedback, but it’s inappropriate to target, threaten, or personally attack our community team.
They are here to champion your concerns and give voice to them. Help us keep conversations civil and productive while we continue to work toward making Marvel’s Avengers an entertaining experience for you,” the studio wrote.
So it seems that it was the publisher’s move. It wasn’t precisely player- and consumer-friendly, though…
