MOVIE NEWS – Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explains his different version of Morpheus, and a new synopsis reveals a more dangerous digital world for Matrix Resurrections.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is one of the new faces in the Matrix franchise, but he plays a character that fans already know: Morpheus. Indeed, he takes over the role previously played by Laurence Fishburne, who will not be present in The Matrix Resurrections. But apparently, it will be “a very different iteration of the character”, according to the new performer.
The Matrix franchise is no stranger to replacing characters with different actors. When Gloria Foster (the original Oracle) died between films two and three, Mary Alice took over her role for The Matrix Revolutions. The new form of the Oracle revealed that this happened because a nefarious program destroyed her previous body.
In an interview with EW, when asked if this will be the case for Morpheus, Abdul-Mateen vaguely explains, “What viewers will eventually understand is that there are many Matrix rules. Age, appearance, things that we identify as accurate can be manipulated in this world. The Matrix is where anything is possible.
Elsewhere, a new synopsis has been revealed that gives some hints about the film. This synopsis teases a “stronger, more secure and more dangerous” version of the titular artificial reality. In addition to a much more formidable matrix, the new synopsis, which Warner Bros. released, brings Keanu Reeves’ Thomas Anderson back into the fray as he must once again decide whether to leave his life behind in search of the truth.
Here’s the synopsis: “In a world of two realities – everyday life and what lies behind it – Thomas Anderson will have to choose whether to follow the white rabbit once again. The choice, though an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the matrix, which is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever.”
Along with Keanu Reeves and Carrie Moss, the cast also includes Jada Pinkett Smith, Lambert Wilson and Daniel Bernhardt, all reprising roles from the original trilogy, and newcomers Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), Christina Ricci (The Lizzie Borden Chronicles), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Looking), Telma Hopkins (Dead to Me), Eréndira Ibarra (Sense8, Ingobernable), Toby Onwumere (Sense8, Empire), Max Riemelt (Sense8) Smith (Sense8, Treadstone).
Lana Wachowski directed the film from a script she co-wrote with David Mitchell & Aleksander Hemon, based on the characters imagined by the Wachowski sisters.
Matrix Resurrections will be released in cinemas and HBO Max from 15 December 2021
