Several of the popular titles released for the Xbox 360, the console generation two years ago, have received an unexpected update, so Redmond has something to worry about.
Xbox celebrates its 20th birthday today, as the first Microsoft console (and Halo: Combat Evolved; the latest addition to the series is Halo Infinite, which we recently rumoured would be launching its free-to-play multiplayer component today…) launched in the US on 15 November 2001, so it’s a round number indeed for Xbox boss Phil Spencer to celebrate.
But the odd thing is that several of the Xbox 360 games that are still popular today have received an update, but it’s not such a surprise that several of the games on the list are Bethesda-related. VGC says that Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fable Anniversary, Fable 3, Dead Space, Dead Space 3, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 got updated. There is no official reasoning behind the updates, but one can guess that they were made for better backwards compatibility (and yes, PlayStation 5 CAN improve in this area…).
Microsoft should reveal everything shortly, as a broadcast will be available on YouTube, Twitch and Facebook at 10 AM PT. It will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Xbox. The tech company that has recently made some significant acquisitions (Xbox Game Studios, for example, recently acquired the whole of Bethesda), but has not released sales figures for Xbox consoles for years (presumably because the PlayStation 4 beat the Xbox One by a landslide in the previous console generation; officially, they say it’s irrelevant information…).
In any case, it has to be acknowledged that Microsoft has more respect for older games than Sony (remember Jim Ryan’s E3 2016 comment where he threw them under the bus).
