Publisher Funcom and developer Shiro Games have announced that they are working on a new real-time strategy game, Dune: Spice Wars, which will arrive on PC in 2022, in Early Access form for now.
Dune: Spice Wars is one of several new games to be unveiled during The Game Awards 2021: a 4X-element RTS inspired by the novel by Frank Herbert. The release is confirmed for PC only now and will start its Early Access period in 2022. The topic is hot, with the recent theatrical release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which we have also commented positively on.
It is being developed by Shiro Games, which brought us the well-received strategy game Northgard in 2019. Spice Wars will feature several factions, such as the Atreides and the House of Harkonnen, and our primary mission will be to acquire and control spice on the barren planet of Arrakis.
To achieve this goal, we can resort to less than honourable methods such as sabotage, espionage and, if we want to go to extremes, war. All of these tricks may seem like overkill, but they will be more than ordinary in Spice Wars and allow us to take advantage of more favourable situations. More details can be found on the official Steam page.
A multiplayer mode is also expected in Dune: Spice Wars, but it doesn’t seem to be immediately available in the Early Access version, as the developers are focusing on single-player gameplay for now. Spice Wars will also have its campaign, which will be available to try out before the official launch. No console versions have been announced yet.
