MOVIE NEWS – Fans have been waiting for the final season of Peaky Blinders for a long time; now it looks like the series is going out with a bang.
Fans of Peaky Blinders have been both excited and sad for the sixth season of the famous gangster drama, thanks to the announcement last year that it would be the final season of the award-winning series. The BBC has started the new year with a treat, releasing the first trailer for the upcoming season 6, which will see the return of Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and co.
The sixth season will focus on the story of Tommy Shelby, but that doesn’t mean it will be the last we see of Peaky Blinders, as creator Steven Knight has already hinted that there will be a sequel, in the form of a film, which will start shooting next year. He said:
“Peaky is back and with a bang.”
“After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
The trailer begins with Murphy’s Tommy Shelby standing in a field at night and firing a machine gun into the sky, and ends with Shelby saying, “One last deal to be done, then we Peaky Blinders rest.” The rest of the trailer reveals very little about what will happen to the popular characters when the finale comes around. Fans can only hope that their favourites will make it out alive, but as we all know, there’s absolutely no guarantee of that with a series like this…
While most of the cast is returning, including Paul Anderson, Finn Cole and Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as Stephen Graham, Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly in the series, passed away last April at the age of 52 after a long battle with cancer. We do not yet know what will happen to her character from the trailer. Earlier, Murphy spoke to Today FM about how sad it was to film the final season without the actress. He said:
“Sad for all of us who knew her, and the people who were close to her and the fans. She was like the matriarch of Peaky Blinders, and the person I was closest to. The Polly and Tommy scenes were some of my favorite scenes in the show. It’s desperately sad. We’re all still trying to come to terms with it.”
Peaky Blinders has been one of the most extensive BBC series of the last decade. As it has found its audience streaming on Netflix, season six will undoubtedly bring the highest ratings ever, as the final seasons usually do. Many fans are just hoping that the series can avoid the disappointing endings that have been seen in other long-running series and bring the story to a fitting conclusion.
