Peaky Blinders: Series To End Next Year, Movie To Start In 2023

Series creator Steven Knight revealed that filming on the Peaky Blinders movie will begin in 18 months, while the sixth and final season of the series will debut early next year. Both productions are set to be big!

A new update on the planned Peaky Blinders movie reveals that filming will begin in 2023. As of now, filming for the sixth and final season of the popular TV series is complete. Speaking at a panel discussion on the franchise at the BFI London Film Festival, Steven Knight noted that the season had been thoroughly edited ahead of its premiere in spring 2022. The plan from then on is to start filming the movie in 18 months.

“Then [after Season 6 is finished] I’ll write the feature film, which will be set in Birmingham, and we’ll shoot it there. And that will probably be the end of the saga in a way,” Knight said, according to Variety. While this suggests that Peaky Blinders will conclude its story with the upcoming film adaptation, Knight did tease that more “related” series set in the same universe may come later, though he declined to call them “spinoffs”.

If it turns out that Peaky Blinders continues with a spinoff, Steven Knight also said that he would probably not return to steer the ship. He says he’d rather “pass the baton” and let a new writer try out where to go next in this world. As for which characters or potential story threads could branch off in a different series, it’s probably best to wait for the film to arrive to get an idea of how things will play out at the end of the story.

Produced by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders follows the lives of the Shelby crime family in Birmingham, England, in the early 1900s. The all-star cast includes Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Tom Hardy, Paddy Considine, Adrien Brody, Aidan Gillen and Anya Taylor-Joy. First aired on BBC Two in 2013, it has since found a global audience on Netflix. Previously, Knight hinted that Cillian Murphy’s Tommy would be at the heart of Peaky Blinders, but that won’t be necessary if the franchise branches out.

“In the shape, it’s in now, it’s absolutely impossible to make it work without Cillian,” he told Birmingham Live. “As it grows and develops, who knows? There may be worlds that are part of the Peaky world that are about someone else, but he’s the centre [around which] everything revolves.” He added: “It will continue in a different form, which is what the film will be, and beyond that, we want to continue the world. In other words, the story of Small Heath and the Shelby family will continue. I want it to go on for as long as… as long as it takes”.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Sophie Rundle, who plays Ada Shelby, also revealed what’s in store for her character: “She’s just cooler than ever. I think [creator] Steve [Knight] said it’s going to be the last one, so you can imagine – he’s going to be shooting all guns blazing. It’s always, you know, very rock and roll. But it’s the last series, [so] everybody’s really going for it. It’s an exciting and sad feeling. We’re all very excited to get it done and tell more of the story. But yes, Ada is as cool as ever. She always has been.”

The series will also include a game, which you can read more about here!
