Sony Santa Monica Screenwriter Accuses Tencent of Sexism And Racism

Alanah Pearce shares rumours about Tencent allegedly asked for no black people in a movie

Controversy is once again swirling around Tencent Games. Alanah Pearce, a writer and games reporter currently at Sony Santa Monica Studio, has accused the Chinese conglomerate of sexism and racism, explaining how rumours reached her about the company’s inappropriate requests for a film.

In an interview for The Serfs on Twitch picked up by The Gamer, Pearce rails against Tencent’s policies and gives the example of a feature film project he heard about. Apparently, the Asian giant wanted to tell a story where there were no black people, and the women had bigger breasts.

These guidelines would not only be used in films but also in video games with light-skinned characters and women with large breasts. The Australian journalist did not want to give more details on this issue or cite specific titles, worried about a possible complaint from the holding company: “these are rumours I have heard, I don’t know if they are true”.

The journalist made these statements in the context of Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, explaining how the public should be more concerned about Tencent’s growing leadership position than the Xbox parent company.

Over the past few months, the holding company has greenlit several equity deals in Sumo Digital and Yager Development, to name just two of its acquisitions, which join the conglomerate’s other majority or minority stakes in Riot Games, Epic Games, and others. In this way, Tencent seeks to further expand its position as the world’s number one company in video game revenues.
