The game by Tango Gameworks tries to appeal to everyone: not everyone wants graphics with ray tracing, and not everyone strives to have sixty frames per second either…
Set in the Japanese capital, Ghostwire: Tokyo (whose events are set up in Ghostwire: Tokyo – Prelude, is now available for free on PlayStation 5, PC, and PlayStation 4, though the main game won’t be out for that; it’s a visual novel) will offer six graphical options on Sony’s November 2020-launched console, so maybe everyone will be happy with the possibilities.
The Quality mode aims for greater graphical detail and offers ray tracing visuals. As a compromise, it runs at 30 frames per second. Performance mode is the complete opposite: frame rate is prioritised for the smoothest gameplay, so Ghostwire: Tokyo runs at 60 FPS in exchange for a lower resolution. High Framerate Quality is a little trickier: there’s no limit to the frame rate, and the graphics have been fine-tuned to give you even more frames per second. It’s practically Quality mode with no frame rate limit, so you can expect performance to fluctuate between 30-60 FPS.
High Framerate Performance is essentially Performance mode without the frame rate cap. However, it requires a display capable of more than 60 Hz, as Ghostwire: Tokyo runs at 60+ frames per second. VGC is currently testing the game and has experienced screen tearing, but the site says that a patch will fix the bug before the game is released. Then, there’s High Framerate Quality (VSync) and High Framerate Performance (VSync), which are the same as the two modes we mentioned, but VSync is applied. It can reduce the frequency of frame rates, but it can’t eliminate screen tearing.
Ghostwire: Tokyo will launch on March 25, just over a week from now, on PlayStation 5 and PC. It could be Bethesda’s last timed PlayStation 5 exclusive, as the company is now part of Microsoft.
