MOVIE NEWS – Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes will be Netflix’s newest true crime documentary series, which will explore the case of the infamous serial killer. A trailer for the series is now available.
Netflix already has experience in streaming the true crime genre; the service has already hosted Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer, The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness, and Memories of a Murderer: The Nilsen Tapes. Now the three one-hour episodes on the John Wayne Gacy murders will be released later this month, directed by Joe Berlinger.
Gacy, the notorious serial killer of the 1970s, was originally an aspiring politician, a beloved local entrepreneur and a part-time clown for children’s hospitals, but he was also a narcissist. Gacy killed 33 men between 1972 and 1976 and buried their bodies under his Chicago home. It is a real mystery how his murders have gone undetected for so long, and this is one of the issues that the documentary will address. Fifty years later still not all of his victims have been identified, but audio recordings of conversations between Gacy and his defence team may provide a new perspective. The documentary series will feature a series of interviews, including one with a survivor of Gacy’s who has remained silent about the traumatic story until now. The main question the series will seek to answer is: how did a public figure like Gacy go unnoticed for so long?
The story of Gacy, or the ‘killer clown’, has inspired other filmmakers, with actors such as Brian Dennehy, Mark Holton and William Forsythe playing the killer. He has also been the subject of documentaries such as Devil in Disguise, which was released last year. Netflix’s documentary series is sure to be very interesting and we don’t have to wait much longer, as it will be released on the streaming service’s platform on 20 April.
