Destiny Is At The Forefront Of Sony’s Cross-Entertainment Initiative

Sony is serious about expanding beyond video games, and its recently acquired Bungie IP could indeed represent multiple genres of entertainment.

We’ve previously reported that the acquisition of Bungie was indeed a strategic move, as the studio that owns Destiny could help Sony move in a cross-entertainment direction. It has already been confirmed by a job advertisement for a senior producer position at Bungie… for Destiny’s linear media! This term is applied to things like television, books, film, comics, and radio because they have a beginning and an end, and there is no interactivity like in video games…

And it is confirmed by the job advertisement: they want to “into new categories including TV, films, books, comics and audio formats.” The Senior Producer will oversee externally developed projects “with creative leadership and external partners to ensure linear media projects are hitting milestones, staying on budget, and representing Destiny at the highest-quality bar.”

Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s CFO, said at the time of the Bungie acquisition that they could help “nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner” as they “have Sony Pictures and Sony Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.” Well, this job offer underlines all of that, as Derick Tsai, the director of the League of Legends animated shorts, has been transferred from Riot Games and is now working as the head of development for Destiny Universe Transmedia under Bungie.

Of course, let’s not expect an announcement immediately, within weeks, that Destiny will be turned into, say, a new book and animated series. 9, they drank the bear’s skin in advance: the announced animated series didn’t materialise, nor did the Nintendo 3DS/PlayStation Vita port; and with Rise of the Robots, despite the horrible gameplay, they were so confident of success that they even published a book by Jim Murdoch.)
