Will Crazy Taxi And Jet Set Radio Be Resurrected In SEGA’s Super Game Initiative?

The Japanese publisher is reportedly looking to do what Epic Games has already done with Fortnite (a successful franchise they own).

Bloomberg reports that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio (which were mainly known on the SEGA Dreamcast, but the latter, for example, also made it to Xbox with Jet Set Radio Future, which SEGA seems to be ignoring…) could get a big-budget reboot. According to the site it is citing sources familiar with the matter. Both games are scheduled for release in 2-3 years, so 2025 at the latest.

These games will also be the early birds in the Super Game initiative, which SEGA first discussed last May. In a nutshell, the aim is to generate continued revenue from the company’s existing IP by creating online communities around it. (You could call it an MMO, and you wouldn’t be far wrong, as that definition fits the genre.)

And last November, SEGA took it to a new level when it announced a strategic agreement with Microsoft to create large-scale, international games in a next-gen development environment based on the Redmond-based company’s Azure cloud platform. It will allow the Super Game initiative to bring new and innovative games to the market, building on four pillars: global’, ‘online’, ‘community’ and ‘IP utilization’. And we also recently reported that SEGA is planning more games in its initiative, which could even include NFT and blockchain technology.

We can easily conclude that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio could also get NFTs, which will not be very popular with the community, because although there are some renowned developers on the technology’s side (Richard Garriott – Ultima, Tabula Rasa; Peter Molyneux – Populous, Fable…), it’s considered environmentally damaging.

As expected, SEGA does not comment on the Crazy Taxi/Jet Set Radio matter…
