What Microsoft is doing seems strange to us at first, but if you look at what the Redmond-based company has put together, it’s a pretty neat solution.
Xbox now has an official tartan after celebrating the 20th anniversary of its launch in Scotland. The tartan was created in collaboration with Gordon Nilson Kiltmakers (GNK). GNK has previously produced the design for the Scottish national football team, Celtic FC, and The Rangers FC, so it would be hard to find a more credible company for the anniversary celebrations than the Redmond company. The design was then woven by Lochcarron, the oldest weaving mill in Scotland, based in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders.
The tartan uses five colours (RV green, Viv green, Apple 12, black and white) to tie in with the official colours of the Xbox brand. Xbox UK is running a competition on its social media platforms today to win a custom patterned Xbox controller. “It’s an honour to work in partnership with one of the biggest technology brands in the world. It’s certainly a collaboration that hadn’t sprung to mind for us, connecting kilts and games consoles. Still, we have many shared values – innovation, expression of creativity and a sense of heritage. Coming together to celebrate Xbox’s 20th anniversary is the perfect marriage for us,” said Gordon Nicolson, tartan designer.
Xbox EMEA social media marketing manager Graeme Boyd added, “We are so pleased that we can celebrate the anniversary of Xbox in Scotland in a fun, authentically Scottish way. It’s fantastic that we can work with innovators in a grand Scottish tradition like Gordon Nicolson whilst giving something exceptional to gaming fans.”
Connecting the controller to an Xbox Series console rewards an exclusive dynamic background, and incidentally, Microsoft also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Xbox by launching a limited edition transparent controller. They’ve added the 20th-anniversary logo to the Xbox Series controller.
