Charlie Kraslavsky, the actor who portrayed Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil live-action scenes, will reprise the iconic role after 26 years.
The first Resident Evil game was released in 1996 on the original PlayStation and immediately revolutionised the survival horror genre. The game was also revolutionary in that it gave the player a choice of two protagonists from the start, and this choice influenced everything from the game’s difficulty to the characters the player would meet throughout the story. These two main characters, Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield have since become gaming icons.
Over the series’ 26-year history, numerous actors have portrayed the characters, and the stars of Resident Evil have been transformed many times over.
On the original PlayStation console, each character appeared as a cartoon-like mass of early 3D polygons, but Resident Evil’s opening and several ending episodes also featured live-action cutscenes to give players a more meaningful view of the characters.
Now, for the first time since 1996, some of the original Resident Evil live-action actors are reprising their iconic roles in a fan film, reportedly titled The Keeper. Very little is known about the project other than that it is based on the Resident Evil universe and that three actors from the original 1996 game will reprise their roles. These actors are Charlie Kraslavsky, Greg Smith and Eric Pirius, who play Chris Redfield, Barry Burton and Albert Wesker.
With some photos from the set, fans can see Charlie wearing Chris’s BSAA outfit, which looks much more modern than the 1996 Chris.
The Keeper in the announced title is a reference to the first Keeper diary from Resident Evil, from which the iconic line “Itchy, Tasty” is taken. But there’s some confusion as to which Resident Evil fan film these photos are from, if any, as there are actually two RE fan films in development titled The Keeper…
One of the films was flashed back in 2020 by the popular RE community YouTube channel Residence of Evil, which announced that it was collaborating with director Shawn Lebert on a fan film in development, but Residence of Evil founder J.J. denies that these photos are from their film, which is still in development. There is, however, another project called The Keeper, made by Kresimir Knezovic and Andrew Saullo for the YouTube channel TheatricalChicken.
The concept trailer for this fan film was released on TheatricalChicken’s YouTube channel on March 25, but it’s unclear how Chris Redfield in a BSAA uniform would fit into the concept.
Charlie Kraslavsky has confirmed that the elusive project will be uploaded to YouTube in the coming weeks and is sure to bring back a sense of nostalgia for fans of the original 1996 Resident Evil. Many fans have also sent photos from the shoot to the makers of Netflix’s upcoming Resident Evil series, hoping that these original S.T.A.R.S. members will get a cameo.
