Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: An MCU Artist Has Been Hired By Insomniac!

The MCU concept artist will serve as art director for Insomniac Games’ upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

After the incredibly successful PS4 release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, perhaps the most acclaimed Spider-Man creation outside of the MCU, fans eagerly awaited the sequel. Last year, Insomniac Games announced that there would be one coming to PS5 called Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which would see Peter Parker and Miles Morales take on the role of Spider-Man, with the pair taking on the evil Venom symbiote.

Not much information about the highly anticipated sequel is known, except for a teaser trailer shown at Sony’s PlayStation Showcase in September. It showed both Spider-Men taking on the gangsters of New York City before revealing Venom, played by horror icon Tony Todd.

In order to keep the cinematic feel of other Marvel projects, such as the MCU, Insomniac Games brought on board an artist with experience in the film franchise.

Davison Carvalho was hired by Insomniac Games back in February of this year after working as a freelance concept artist on several MCU films. These include Dr. Strange, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok and Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, where he was responsible for the look of the environments for the films. He has a similar role in video games, working primarily on UI and concepts for games such as Fortnite and New World.

According to his ArtStation profile and associated social media accounts, he is the Art Director for Insomniac Games and PlayStation Studios, taking over from former Art Directors Grant Hollis and Gavin Goulden for Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The latter two art directors are currently working on another Marvel project for Insomniac Games, a standalone game based on Wolverine, the infamous member of the X-Men. Based on Carvalho’s previous work, it’s likely that he can help guide the project to be like the fan-favourite MCU movies in terms of art direction.

Since the reveal, no more information about Spider-Man 2 has been revealed, and with leaks and rumours, it’s also hard to say exactly what the game will contain.

Marvel Games Vice President Bill Rosemann described what content fans could expect from the sequel, saying it will be similar to what made Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales so good, “but more”.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is scheduled for release on PS5 in 2023.
