Although we’re not talking about an official solution, we have to point out that a PlayStation 5 Slim made by a YouTube user is less than two centimetres thick!
DIY Perks has essentially beaten Sony to the punch regarding the PlayStation 5 Slim. He worked for months to sculpt Sony’s beautiful yet audaciously huge console so it could fit in a smaller space. One of the solutions he’s deployed is to replace Sony’s cooling system with a custom copper water block and water channelling system that keep the console at a low temperature. It couldn’t have been cheap, as the copper material needed to build the console alone cost $240, so half the console’s price has already been spent on it.
Still, the result is a tiny PlayStation 5 that’s 1.9 centimetres wide and has a better cooling system than the original console. The only thing that might be a problem is the volume level when using the PlayStation 5 Slim. Incidentally, the PS5 Slim isn’t official yet. However, we reported last May that the PlayStation 5 could hit the production line in 2022 in a redesigned form, as AMD will provide Sony with a new, customized 6-nanometer processor.
Then, Taiwan’s DigiTimes reported that chipmakers (including TSMC, which is switching to 2-nanometer technology by 2025) are preparing for Sony to start manufacturing the redesigned PlayStation 5 console in the second and third quarters, so we should hear some news about what’s planned. In May, Sony had already signed off on a new console design in Japan, as the company added updated radio equipment in the CFI-1200 series. The company has already received design certification for this model in the Asian island nation. Last year, there was also a redesigned PlayStation 5, but this was merely a modification to the components, with no significant changes to the exterior.
We wonder when Sony will try the PlayStation 5 Slim. So far, all the PlayStation consoles have received such a scaled-down version…
