She was previously Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s writer after Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
It has emerged on the ResetEra forum that Mary DeMarle, Eidos Montréal’s executive narrative director, has been appointed senior narrative director at BioWare. Her role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was to create the story and lead the writing team, and since there was quite a lot of banter between the team members, she has talent aplenty. She was the lead writer and narrative designer on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and then the director of the narrative for the franchise before the Marvel adventure.
Since DeMarle is no longer with Embracer Group (the massively expanding collective bought the studio and its IP from Square Enix, among others), don’t expect Deus Ex to continue. Embracer might be thinking about remakes for Deus Ex, but even that would be more than nothing (JC Denton deserves attention even nowadays, with or without his lip smacks).
DeMarle has previously written for Homeworld 2, Myst 3: Exile, and Myst 4: Revelation, but for her position at BioWare, it’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy that seems most relevant. Five months ago, BioWare was looking for someone to be the narrative director for Mass Effect, who would work with the executive team to create the narrative, branching gameplay, and character vision. She might have some influence on it, as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is most likely already at an advanced stage (true, we don’t know when it will be released, but it will be earlier than the new Mass Effect, which will need 1-2 years at least).
Since it was an integral part of Mass Effect to have our team members have some banter, hopefully, it will be done in the next instalment because without it, we’d get a relatively dry sci-fi TPS. And that would be pretty forgettable, especially considering the history of this franchise.
