Will The PlayStation VR2 Come With A Removable, Interchangeable Cable?

Meanwhile, a company specialising in eye-tracking has confirmed that Sony has licensed their technology.

Bryan Paul, the man behind the PSVR Without Parole YouTube channel, has been well-sourced regarding news and leaks about PlayStation VR, and now he’s come up with an exciting-sounding detail about PlayStation VR2: he says the PlayStation VR2 cable can be removed and replaced. One end of this cable will go into the PlayStation 5 with the USB-C connector, while the other end will be a proprietary port on the PlayStation VR2. It means that if, for example, the cable breaks during use, you don’t have to invest in another headset straight away. It could be a very consumer-friendly move by Sony if Paul’s source is correct.

Sony, meanwhile, has licensed eye-tracking technology from Tobii for the PlayStation VR2. Tobii itself claimed this in a statement published on Friday. So the company, which claims to be an international leader in eye-tracking (and a pioneer in eye-tracking computing), has announced the partnership ahead of Sony. According to Tobii CEO Anand Srivatsa, “PlayStation VR2 establishes a new baseline for immersive virtual reality (VR) entertainment and will enable millions of users worldwide to experience the power of eye-tracking. Our partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) continues to validate Tobii’s world-leading technology capabilities to deliver cutting-edge solutions at a mass-market scale.”

The company will receive money upfront from Sony under the agreement as early as this year. Tobii sells head and eye-tracking cameras that use a unique infrared sensor to monitor the user’s eye movements for $230. More than 50 games (including Flight Simulator and Far Cry 6) are supported. In these, you can also use your eyes to control certain functions (aiming, selecting objects) and even focus on some aspects of the visuals when you look at them. Some laptops can also use their PC app for head tracking.

What does it mean in the headset coming this year or next year? You can control some aspects of games with your eyes in PlayStation VR2.
