MOVIE NEWS – Lance Reddick, who plays Albert Wesker, explains that he didn’t want to play an established Resident Evil character but to bring to life what was in the script.
Resident Evil had already made history in the world of video games, and he wanted to repeat the feat more than once in the film and television industry. Although these latest incursions have not been as successful as the digital titles, the franchise is not giving up trying: there is this live-action series, for example, which, after the bloodiest trailers, made our hair stand on end, is coming to Netflix in the next few days.
“I didn’t think of having to play an already established iconic character, I just kept trying to bring what was on the page to life.”- Lance Reddick
We haven’t delved too deep into the actors’ statements about the series, but PC Gamer’s interview with actor Lance Reddick, who plays Albert Wesker in the Netflix production, has got the gaming community’s attention. Reddick said he had “no idea that [the Resident Evil movie series] was actually based on a videogame” and “only knew the films so I walked into that kind of blind.”
Reddick then goes on to talk about how he stepped into the role of the mythical Albert Wesker: “When I was doing it, I didn’t think of having to play an already established iconic character, I just kept trying to bring what was on the page to life,” he told PC Gamer. “As the series gets further along, you see how my Wesker is connected to the Wesker from the games.” Obviously, a TV actor doesn’t necessarily need to know every franchise in the video game world from the beginning, but it’s not clear from his answer whether he eventually played Resident Evil games to get to know the original Albert Wesker.
The live-action series premiere on Netflix on July 14, so we’ll see Lance Reddick play the character in a few days.
The new version of Resident Evil follows Jade Wesker as she struggles to survive in a world overrun by mad creatures while trying to make her way to New Raccoon City, and the trailers are promising – or at least hint at a severe bloodbath.
